The most important islands are: Mahé (the biggest, where most of the population lives), Aldabra, Assumption and Cosmoledo.

The northern islands are made mainly of granite rocks that can reach 900 meters above sea level, and are where most of the population is based. The southern islands are coral islands and are uninhabited. The climate is tropical with abundant rainfall.

The most important ethnic group inhabiting the archipelago is Seychellois, a mix of African, European (French) and Asian (Chinese and Indian) influences.

Tourism is the most important income earner in the economy. Other important sectors are fishing (tuna) agriculture (cinnamon, vanilla, coconut and copra, among other products) and the industrial sector (canned goods, cigarettes, etc.)
