Territorial organization and physical geography

The region of Biobio is located between the 36º00’ and 38º30’ southern latitude points and between the 71º00’ western longitude until the Pacific ocean. The capital is the city of Concepcion.

This region’s relief has four characteristic zones: coastal plains, the Coastal mountain range, the intermediate depression and the Andes Mountains.
Human and economic geography

The region of Biobio concentrates 12.3% of the country’s total population, which makes it the second most populated one in the country.

The most populated comunas (counties) are: Concepción, Talcahuano, Los Angeles and Chillan, and the least populated are San Fabian de Alico, Antuco, San Rosendo and Quilaco.

In the last few years, the region has provided, on average, over 9% of the national GDP. Its most important activities are livestock, agriculture, industrial activities and fishing.
Tourism geography

The province of Ñuble is characterized for being in a fully farming and huaso zone, but also for being the place of birth of great Chileans.

Near the city of Los Angeles there are several places of interest for tourists, like Antuco volcano, Laja lagoon, Las Canteras hacienda, Salto del Laja, etc.
