Territorial organization and physical geography

– This region is located between the 43º38′ and 49º16′ southern latitude points and from 71º06′ western longitude until the Pacific ocean.
– The capital of the region of Aisen is Coihaique, which has 50,041 inhabitants. The region is split into four provinces: Aisen, Coihaique, General Carrera and Capitan Prat.
– The regional relief is very bumpy and is characterized by the absence of the intermediate depression, which is replaced by a system of archipelagoes and the presence of large glacier masses.

Human and economic geography

– According to the 2002 Census, this region has 91,492 inhabitants, making it the least populated one in the country with only 0.6% of the national total.
– The important economic activities are: agriculture, cattle farming, fishing, silviculture and mining.
– Non traditional products are exported from this region, such as: flowers, meat and organic honeys, rugs, mushrooms, etc.

Hydrography and tourism geography

– There are numerous rivers in this region, a few stand outs are: Baker, Pascua, Palena, Aisen, Cisnes and Bravo.
– There are 19 Protected Wild Area in the region of Aisen, 5 of which are national parks, 11 are national reserves and 2 are natural monuments.
– A few of the more well-known tourist attractions of this region are: San Rafael lagoon, Puyuhuapi hot springs, lake General Carrera and Caleta Tortel.
