He was born on June 23rd, 1866, in Pichilemu, to parents Jose Maria Caro and Rita Rodriguez. He studied at the San Pedro Damian section of the Seminary of Santiago. He continued his higher learning in Rome, at the Pio Latino school and at the Gregorian University, where he obtained the degree of doctor of Theology. He was ordained a priest on December 20th, 1890, in this Italian city.

His first priestly activities were as the parish priest of the town of Mamiña (region of Tarapaca), professor of the Seminary of Santiago and apostolic vicar of Tarapaca.

In 1912, he assumed as bishop of Iquique, position he held until 1925, when Pope Pius XI transferred him to La Serena as a member of the diocese.

In 1939, Caro returned to the capitol after being named archbishop of Santiago. One of his projects was obtaining funding for the construction of the Templo Votivo de Maipu (Maipu Temple of Worship), setting down the first stone on July 16th, 1944.

On May 17th, 1946, Pope Pius XII ordains him cardinal at the Consistorio, becoming the first cardinal in our country. Four years later, the Holy Sede gave him the title of Pimado de Chile, for his 60 years as a priest.

In October of 198, he participated in the conclave that elected Pope John XXIII.

He passed away in Santiago on December 4th, 1958.
