They have a thermal structure which is divided into three layers: the surface layer, made up of warm and low density waters; the thermocline layer which is between 200 and 1000 metres deep, and the deep layer, which is formed by cold and dense waters.
There are four oceans: the Pacific Ocean, which is the largest and has an area of more than 165 million km2. It is followed in size by the Atlantic Ocean (82 million km2), the Indian Ocean (73 million km2) and the Arctic Ocean (14 million km2).
