In issue number fifteen of our collection we have gotten to know the legend of the warlocks of Salamanca and learned more about the history and geography of the Norte Chico (Small North). The warlocks of Salamanca

– It is said that the art of witchcraft is leaned in a cave in Salamanca. Every now and then, parties are held there were food is eaten using gold and silver cutlery. Legend says a young man who was invited by one of the warlocks stole a silver spoon and hid it in his pocket. He unexplainably blacked-out, and when he came to, he was in the town square, and instead of the silverware he stole, he had a marble.

Norte Chico (Small North): valleys and desert

– The Region of Atacama is administratively split into three provinces: Copiapo, Huasco and Chañaral. The capital is Copiapo.
– The Region of Atacama is the fourth least populated region in the country after Aisen, Magallanes and Arica y Parinacota.
– The northern border of the Region of Coquimbo is the Region of Atacama; its southern border is the Region of Valparaiso; the eastern border is Argentina and the western border is the Pacific ocean.

First inhabitants and relief

– The main cultures that lived in the Norte Chico were the San Pedro or Atacameño people, the Diaguita and the El Molle culture.
– Transverse valleys replace the intermediate depression in the Region of Atacama.
– In the Region of Coquimbo, coastal plains appear as a series of vast, terraced strips of land.
