According to the 2002 census, the Region of Aisen registered 91.492 inhabitants (10.991 more people than in 1992) taking the fifth position among the regions with the most population increase between censuses. Despite this, still is the country’s least populated region, with only 0, 6% of the total. Besides, the regional density is 0, 84 inhabitants per km2, which is one of Chile’s lowest figure.
The region’s most populated province is Coihaique with 51.103 persons, while the less populated is Capitan Prat, with 3.837. The most populated comunas (counties) are Coihaique(50.041) and Aisen (22.353) and the less populated are O´higgins (463) and Tortel (507).
Concerning its distribution, 80, 5% lives at urban zones and only a 19, 5% lives at rural sectors. The major concentrations of urban population are in Coihaique and Puerto Aisen cities and the comunas (counties) with larger population percentage (even the 100%) at rural zones are Rio Ibañez, Lago Verde, Tortel and O´Higgins.
According to the last census data, the regional population is very well balanced between men and women; however, there is a slight male majority. So, the numbers are: 48.177 men (52, 65%) and 43.315 women (47, 34%).
Regarding to the age distribution, the 2002 Census figures points out that the population continues to be mainly young, though the difference is less regarding 1992, since the elder population grew in almost a 52% in the pointed out period, while the young population only did it in a 3, 2%.
