In this region we can distinguish four types of climate eastbound oriented:

Coastal desert with abundant cloudiness: it runs lengthwise the entire region’s coastal strip, penetrating in some sectors inland the Copiapo and Huasco valleys. It stands out for its abundant morning cloudiness and night fog during the whole year. Temperatures are mild since all the months of the year vary between the 10 and 20% C, with a daily oscillation of 7, 5°C. Precipitations fall in winter (from June to August) and its annual relative moisture is 74%.

Transitional desert: is located in the intermediate strip (between the 1.200 and 1.500 masl), especially in the pampas. Its main features are high temperatures during the day, a relative low moisture, little cloudiness and precipitations only fall in winter.

Cold mountain desert: is above the 1.500 up to the 4.000 masl. Among its main characteristics are the great air dryness and winter precipitations. Moreover, its temperature fluctuations are regulated by the altitude.

High mountain Tundra: is above the 4.000 and 4.500 masl in the ranges north sector and among the 3.500 and 3.88 masl in the south of the same. It has low temperatures during the whole year, due to the increase of altitude. Precipitations are more abundant and it snows on the high peaks.
