Another young man that found death in the battle of La Concepcion was second lieutenant Arturo Perez Canto. Son of Rudencio Perez and Delfina del Canto, he was born in Santiago on November 26th, 1864. With only 14 years of age, he joined the Chilean troops fighting in the pacific war. His young age did not keep him from proving his effort and desire to defend the country.
In 1882, he was sent to the town of La Concepcion along with the Fouth Company. He arrived on July 6th together with another 76 young soldiers to wait for the Peruvian attack. The battle began on July 9th and lasted nearly two days, during which the Chileans defended the flag and nation to the death. Arturo Perez Canto was one of them. The day after the confrontation, Chilean colonel Estanislao del Canto found his body along with another 76 young men, who would later become national heroes.
